Need HELP with Kodak DX6340

I have a Kodak DX6340 which has performed flawlessly for me until today.

When switching the camera ON, the LED next to the viewfinder window blinks
green 7 times, during which time I hear a brief "motor" sound from inside
the camera in four spurts. Then the camera dies.

I tried a new battery, with the same result.

NOW the strange part. I discovered that if I hold down the Info/Flash
button on the top of the camera while switching it on, it comes on with no
problem, takes pictures, all OK. What's going on, and how can I fix it?

Thanks.
