Trust me when I say that I know my Pentax Ebay prices.
The last several SMC-A* 1:1.4 85mm lenses have all sold for over 1000.
They only come up evry 3 weeks or so.

It apparently is rare and good.
Also it is the longest and fastest lens that can manage the magical
figure of 1.4.
I would rather wait for the new one hoping that Pentax is resume
production.
I recall FA50mm1.4 was quite high as well before Pentax restarts.
Luckily I took my time and I got that in the States for a paltry sum
of $220.
I just love not using my flash at all.

The A* is the manual focus version. The FA* is the AF version. Minor
optical changes exist between them.
Nikon (iirc) & Zeiss also have 85/1.4 models and Canon a monster
85/1.2. Getting a little longer, Pentax has a super-fast 135/1.8. In
recent months these went from $800 to $1800.

The "limited" line is FA* (or DA in the case of the new 40mm).

http://www.pentaximaging.com/product..._35mm_standard

They sort of supplemented the FA* line with some oustanding
construction
(can you say "all-metal barrel"?) and fine optics. Even the nice Nikon
45mm
quasi-pancake lens is only a metalized appearance, whereas the 31/43/77
Limiteds are all metal barrels. Little bumps don't leave nicks in the
surface --
the durability goes along with the fine optics here.

That surprises me, since I've only seen one 135 f/1.8 & that was in
screw mount. They're scarcer than hen's teeth.

I don't think HAS is the right word, HAD.

"Had" is correct since it's from the older "A" series.

I saw an old Soligor (iirc) 135/1.8 beast last year.
They used some sort of odd-ball interchangable mount solution.
Optically, yuk.

I think a few on http://www.pdml.net have the 135/1.8.
Today they seem equally well as retirement savings.

I don't doubt its exsistance. I just doubt they're popping up on eBay
very often. I've never seen one on eBay, even back when it was easy to
search the closed auctions.

I've never seen one for sale from any of the big NYC dealers. That's not
to say they haven't been, just that I never found one, and I looked
several times over the years.

The only one I ever saw was in a little hole in the wall camera shop in
Norfolk Va ca 1981. It was a screw mount, and NOT FOR SALE.

Unless you continually look at closed auctions you don't even scratch the
surface of what you actually did miss. I only search out and buy newly
listed improperly priced "Buy It Now" auctions that are generally only seen
in the search engine for available items in the first several minutes after
being listed before being biught up by myself or someone else using the
same strategy.
