Anyone else think that Canon should bring out this lens?

With this lens it would be fantastic for full frame bodies, but also would
cover the needs of those with 1.6 crop factor sensors, because at the
moment there is no walk-a-round 'L' lens really wide enough for non full
frame cameras.

It would probably be too much of a compromise for high quality results
throughout the range, but a useful range indeed.

Yeah, I don't know what limitations are involved in creating such a lens.

I do also think though, that Canon never anticipated that there would be so
many people wanting to use 'L' lenses on non pro bodies such as 10D, 20D,
300D, 350D.

Depends on what you mean by high quality. It delivers very good results
throughout the entire range. Certainly there are compromises... as with
every lens. And any zoom has a few more than a prime. But there are many
working photographers who use this lens to shoot very good (more than
acceptable for and used for magazines, weddings, advertising, etc)
photos with this lens.

That's more than a 4:1 zoom ratio, which means it would be severely
optically compromised...especially given that it would go as wide as 16mm.
The wider you go, the more troublesome it is to extend upward.

I can see the 4:1 (or so) ratio of the 24-105 IS which they just produced,
but the optical difference between 16mm and 24mm is HUGE.

Two problems: size and weight, and cost. Look at the24-70 x.8, and multiply
it times 4.

Just a guess.
