Hi everybody,
Last weekend my EOS 20D locked up again. This problem only occurs when
the battery became exhausted and after recharged it, the problem starts.
The trick of take-off the battery and re-insert it don't work in my
body. I have to detach the lens, take-off the flash card and the battery
and leave the camera for, at least, 8 hours.

By this time, this process it isn't working. What can I do now?

Have anybody here resolved this issue????

Thanks in advance,
Carlos Coutinho

Removing the battery should reboot the computer. Even then, I had not
encountered that kinds of lockup. In my case, turning the power switch
off and on is enough to clear the problem.

Your case doesn't look like an ordinary lock up. If removing the lens
fixes the problem, check the pins in the lens mount. Otherwise, I would
suggest you send the camera in for check up.

I believe there is a firmware update available that may help. In any
case, it should be under warrantee and they should take care of it. So far
I have not had any problems with mine other than the battery grip.

According to Canon, upgrading to firmware should resolve this. It's
quite straight forward to do. I think version 2.02 is the latest version
available.

If you're not confident to upgrade the firmware yourself (because it can
render the camera unusable if something goes wrong) you can always take
it to a Canon service department and they'll do it for you for free.

It did not work well with AA batteries. They lasted about 10 shots. It
is a known problem with certain grips. I believe the current production has
been corrected.

Carlos,

There are several distinct causes to this type of problem with different
solutions. Mine has been diagnosed by Canon as requiring replacement of the
"CF unit and digital board." It is the second CF unit in 4 months. I don't
know what Canon service is like in your country but I have learn't through
hard experience that 'the squeeky wheel gets the oil'.

Thank you very much Dave, you are the first person to say me something
better (better??? for who?)
But now I'm very curious, did your problem solved??
Is yours working properly?
The Canon service in my country is considered the best of south america.
But this is the only one for all south america
(B&H said me they are one of the bests of the world (truth??) and
suggested me to send the machine for them, loosing the warranty)

Thanks for all by the replies,
To people that make suggestion of firmware: mine is 1.1.0 and the 2.0.2
it isn't addressed for this issue. And my camera don't respond to menu
button, the rear LCD is black.. all the time and I don't have the
control of the body, can't make an upgrade! The gear not read the CF
card too, it is locked!
The warranty is another thing... I'm in brazil and the machine was
bought in USA, at B&H. To use the warranty I have to send the machine
again to USA. B&H suggested me to forget the warranty and send the
machine to Canon Service Center of my country. I'm thinking agree with
this...
