I hear good things all the time about the Tamron 70-300. Well I just picked
up an EF-mount Tamron **75**-300. Got it at Fred Miranda for 60 bucks
shipped. It looks almost identical except for not having a macro switch, and
I think it does 1:4 instead of 1:2. Not sure.

But construction-wise, it looks totally identical to it otherwise, and
sample photos at pbase seem to show it doing not too shabby at 300mm just
like the 70-300.

Is it apt to do as well as the 70-300 overall?

Yes, I believe it is the same optical design. I can't explan 75 vs 70
however. It has one LD (also called ED or APO) element to help control
chromatic aberration. The 70-300 has very good bokeh, but sharpness
tails off somewhere above 200mm.
