28-105 lens for a DRebel?

Hi, a newbie here with a newbie question. The kit lens that came with
my drebel is ok, I guess, but I'm thinking of getting a 28-105. I
understand that this EF lens was designed for the Canon film cameras,
not the digitals. Does anyone know if it works just as good with the
drebel as with the film camera? Or should I stick to Canon lenses
designed specifically for their digital cameras?

Check Tamron they make excellent lenses and the price is usually lower than
the specific Camera brand.

Hi there,

I got a 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM used for $150 and love it. I took most of
these pictures with a DRebel XT and the 28-105mm.

Be sure and add your opinions so I can get better.

All EF lenses are made for Canon EOS film cameras and can be used on
the digital line. Canon makes an EF-S lens with a special mount that
only fits some (but not all) of their digital SLRs.

The 28-105 is a pretty good lens. I've used one.

Canon makes two 28-105 lenses. Make sure you get the f/3.5 to f/4.5 version.
They also make an f/4 to f/5.6 which isn't as good.

The advantage there is cost savings but they won't work on a full size
sensor or film camera. Full sensor seems exorbinant now but who knows
what the future will bring whenb everybody has full 35mm frame sensors
for cheap.

Be sure that you are looking at the Canon 28-105 f3.5-4.5, not the f4.5-5.6,
an inferior lens.

Hey Babysinister,

They're fully compatible. The only thing you lose over the kit lens is
that 28mm isn't very wide when you include the FOV crop factor (~38mm).
Watch out as well which 28-105 model you get. The f/4-5.6 ones aren't
worth the money - poor image quality and cheap construction. Try to
find a f/3.5-4.5 on ebay instead - they're an older model and not sold
anymore, but have better optics and features.

Thanks all for a really great and useful set of knowledgeable
responses. Yes, Master Chef, I'll keep you informed of my progress.
Townsend, I may have misunderstood, but do you mean that in order to
fit my drebel, I need an adapter lens (EF-S?) for my 28-10? Or will my
new lens (when I get it from Adorama). By the way, the lens I'm
getting is the good one you guys recommend (the f/3.5 to f/4.5
version). One of you guys said it was discontinued, but I'm supposed
to be getting it from Adorama today. Wish me luck. And thanks again
for all your kind replies and advice.

It will fit.. The D-Rebel mount is designed to take both the EF and
EF-S lenses.
