I am spoiled with my D100 with regard to lag time (none) but I need to get a
compact P&S camera. Which have the least amount of lag time?

I dont completely agree with this. I played around with a Canon SD300 this
weekend and that AF was damn fast for such a compact camera. I believe it
has the same DIGICII processor (as found in my 20D). I am planning on
getting one as my compact. The SD300 is around $320 online, much less than
many other P&S model. Now if you want Av and Tv, look elsewhere.

So generally I am right according to you? Personally I would go into a
camera shop and try it for myself. My V1 is fast but sometimes it can take a
while if you do the wrong thing, my *ist DS is very, very fast, my DCP-51
was horrendously slow but could be okay if you prefocused, etc.

The latest model of Ricoh Caplio claims to have the least shutter lag of any
P&S. I do not recall the exact model name, but I'm sure that you can locate
it via a search engine or by contacting Ricoh.

I don't know where Pumper Hinkle is, but Caplios are unfortunately not
sold in the US.

The fastest cycle time on any P&S I have used is on the Sony V1 (5 mp 4x
optical zoom)

That camera has a few faults (like the flash placement, and no diopter adj on
the view finder) but speed is not among its faults. If shooting where you
dont need to wait for the flash to cycle, it will take a memory stick full of
fine-mode 5mp jpg files, pretty much as fast as you can "point, press,&
shoot".

Focus lag in continuous focus mode is VERY short, almost un-noticeable.

It has a short battery life as compared to other Sony cameras (60 to 80
minutes).

Yes, generally it is a correct you make. The more you pay the faster the AF
should be, but I was just giving one example of a mid to low priced P&S that
has a very, very fast AF. I didnt know this till I read the www.dpreview.com
review on the SD300 and I was shocked when I tried it out at the store.

Sorry for top-posting, but it was too much to re-arrange this thread.

Caplio GX, not imported into USA retail channels, but available in Canada
and perhaps soon as a Rollei model.

It has short lag time, but after two shots, takes 7 seconds between shots
according to the Steve's Digicams review.
