I am trying to help out a senior lady who is my neighbor.
While I do not have much detail she said that her DVD is not working with her 13 year old television. Not sure what "not working" actually means. But she was told it is because her TV was too old. Has anyone else heard of this possibility? -- Michael Michael T. |

But you can buy a connecting device at lots of places. I have an old one that I bought at Radio Shack for about 25 dollars several years ago. dick Dick Sidbury |

If the TV does not have AV or S-Video input, the TV is too old and you may have a luck with a $20 RF modulator that converts AV signal to RF for cable/antenna input. Considering the current TV is going out, it is probably a good idea to invest in a new TV that are HDTV ready for when the current NTSC signal is discontinued in about 2 years -- When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it's already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX Spam block in place, no emil reply is expected at all. Have you actually tried that? When you use an RF modulator, you usually will get brightness fluctuations due to the macrovision crap infesting the DVD's video output. You need to use a TV specifically designed not to barf on macrovision and that pretty much rules out all old tvs. AZ Nomad |

Yes, I realize that there are development costs to recover in the HD set. But why should I (or the neighbor) pay those development costs when we don't care about them? The won't matter for someone's DVDs of SD shows. ------------------------ * http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....&type=category -- 46. If an advisor says to me "My liege, he is but one man. Just like there are cheap Chinese funny-brand DVD players that have "secret" remote key sequences and hidden menus for changing the region (or disabling region checks altogether), there are also some that allow disabling the Macrovision protection by similar means. -- znark Jukka Aho |

It's something to check for. The first DVD player I ever got was a pioneer LD/DVD combo player that wouldn't spew macrovision if you put a jumper in just the right place. Do a search for something like "<make model> macrovision hack" AZ Nomad |

Mind you the DVD player is not hacked at all. When buying the RF modulator, you need to make sure it's designed to work with DVD players. AFAIK all modulators sold nowday works fine with DVD players. The said TV is used in the RV for camping and will remain in use till it blows up. The TV that I do most of the watching has AV inputs. -- When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it's already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX Spam block in place, no emil reply is expected at all. [snip] A few years ago similiar sized HDTV's were in the $1,000 range. As more companies switch to HDTV from current NTSC, more compeition in the market will keep driving the price down. Check back in maybe one year from now, they will probably seems cheap. But don't wait until the last minute because I think there will be a rush to buy HDTV (or HDTV to NTSC converter) when NTSC goes off air permantly. -- When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it's already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX Spam block in place, no emil reply is expected at all.
