I note it will connect to Skype. However does it enable a standard
phone act fully as a normal USB phone (eg Tesco internet phone etc)?

It appears as an audio device in Windows, so at a push you could
probably use it with any software *but* you'd have to dial and hang up
from the computer and not from the phone, which kind of defeats the
point a bit!

It could have been the royal 'we' you were using or a friend you had in
mind. I did not realise you were writing as the spokesperson for a small
band of readers of this group.

The ability to not have a PC on was also wanted. The 3088 does that,
behaves as a normal phone and is the closest match to the OP's needs.
She will have to assess whether it close enough.

Anyone wanting to make calls with Skype and to the PSTN without a
computer being on is not likely at present to find any device more
suitable than this one. The unit comes with a normal phone.

Humble that I am, I cannot claim any royal blood

it does ?

<http://www.trustedreviews.com/networking/review/2006/12/18/RTX-Dualphone-3088/p1>
shows a single phone socket on the unit for connecting to a landline,
but not one for connecting a normal phone to the unit to make calls
via Skype.

"The RTX Dualphone 3088 doesn't require a PC, doesn't require
wireless, and gives you a cordless phone that will place Skype calls
as well as standard land line calls."

"Communication between the phone and the base unit is the standard
DECT communication, which has not been used in a Skype phone yet. One
of the benefits of DECT is that using a single base unit, you can have
multiple handsets. At this stage, I don't think this is the case for
the RTX Dualphone 3088, but it will apparently be added in with a new
firmware release."

Pick up the handset. Dial a number. Connect to the PSTN. Is that not the
function of a normal phone?

I think the plugging in aspect was dealt with in my previous post.

it is, but the unit comes with a cordless phone not a standard phone.

Pick up handset, discover battery is flat, curse at person who
suggested it, put it on charge, wait half an hour, pick up handset and
continue

or, hunt for handset, fail to find it, curse person who suggested it,
give up.

No it is not CRAP.
He is stating it like it is, and I for one agree with him.
