Hi all,

I am getting an error when trying to install Cisco VPN Error 28005 "A
previous version of the client was uninstalled but the computer was not
re-booted. You must re-boot ...."

When the computer re-boots it goes through thesame process again and
goes into an infinite loop of this Error 28005.

Is there any way to prevent this error and allow the installation to
complete?

Many thanks in advance,
Derek

If the previou version of the vpn client still listed in "Control Panel/Add
and Remove programes", you may want to download "Windows Installer Cleanup
utility" to uninstall that first.

If not listed in there, simply delete the following registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce\CISCOR
EBOOTFLAG]

Then try reinstalling again.

Manually Removing the Cisco MSI VPN Client

Removing the Cisco Virtual Adapter

VAInstaller r CS_VirtA

If the above command failed to remove Virtual Adapter, do the
following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\CVirtA

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class
\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}
This is the Network adapters part of the registry. Under this you will
see keys named "0001 0002 ...." and so on. If you look at each key you
will find a "Cisco Systems VPN Adapter".

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Network
\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\Descriptions

There may be others. Search through your registry for "VPN Adapter"
and "cvirta" and you should catch everything. You should try to use
the vainstaller to do the work but as a last resort go through the
registry.

Reboot the machine.

Open REGEDIT
Remove the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Cisco Systems\VPN Client
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Deterministic Networks
Sometimes the system might not allow you to delete this key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion
\Uninstall\{3E5562ED-69AB-4CEC-91E2-64E18EC5ACC6}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Installer
\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\DE2655E3BA96CEC4192E461EE85CCA6C

Delete the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Deterministic Networks

Delete all the old DNE files

dne2000.sys from %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers
dne2000m.inf and dne2000m.pnf from %SystemRoot%\inf
The oem enumeration of the dne2000.inf and .pnf files.
The OEM enumeration .inf file is a file called OEM (some numeric
value). inf. For example oem2.inf and oem2.pnf.
Be careful to only remove OEM files from DNE.

dneinobj.dll from %SystemRoot%\system32. You may need to reboot before
this file can be removed.

Delete the following file:

cvpndrv.sys from %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers

Reboot the machine.

Hi folks,

Many thanks for your advice. Tried everything listed. the windows
installer cleanup does see Cisco VPN and the runonce flag for it does
not exist.

I also went through the manual process to remove registry entries and
files from the hard disk, but it still thinks it has a previous version
of Cisco VPN installed. I just can't figure out what it is that is
triggering this. Any other ideas would be much appreciated

TIA,
Derek
