cisco and cabletron router using ospf

Hi,
I has just been given for my thesis a weird task with some routers.
I'll have to make some Cisco routers work together with an old
cabletron router. The routing protocol will be OSPF and I need to use
the authentication between each couple of routers. My question is
simple: can a Cabletron router work with a Cisco router, if I use OSPF
with authentication? I'm not asking for a configuration, I'd like to
know if someone out there has ever done something similar, just to get
a clue and to know whether they can work together or not.

Thanks in advance
Gianfranco

Since ospf is an open standard it is meant to work in a multi-vendor
environment. This should get you started

Depending on the Cabletron equipment (MMAC 9000?) you may have an
easier task. For a while, Cisco 4000 routers were resold as the
"router blade" in Cabletron MMACs.

There are some proprietary OSPF extensions in Ciscos OSPF, but for the
most part you should be fine. We had it running with Accelar's with
little to no issues.

But MD5 encryption may be where things start to get hairy. good luck.

Well some of the older Cabletron kit was embedded Cisco kit, so
depending on what it is, might be a piece of ****.

Can't tell you what "piece of ****" is, but I'm curious; is the
"Cabletron Router" one of the legacy "CRM" modules (actually a Cisco
4000 on a blade), or one of the newer "Smart Switch Router (SSR)
2000/8000/8600? Either way, you should be able to get it to work. I
recall that I did it years ago. BTW - The routing "guts" of the SSR ran
on GATED-derived routing code, if that tells you anything. Good luck to
you.

Just last year I configured OSPF with MD5 authentication between a
Cat6500 and an SSR2000, 8000, and 8600.

Very straight forward. Debug OSPF on the Cisco side to troubleshoot.

Ok, I'm back. Yesterday I was given the routers so now I know exactly
what I'm dealing with.
First of all, thank you all sooo much for all your kind and quick
answers. I was not expecting such a fast reply

Also, the content of your answers sounds quite interesting too,
because the Cabletron router I was provided is not a piece of junk but
an X-Pedition 8600 Router ...which is one of the routers mentioned in
your replies... so I should be able to achieve my goal. I've been a
CCNA since last December, so I know a lot of theory about Cisco
routers but still have to practise a lot of real hardware and this is
gonna be a good chance for me to do it, even if it may take me a while
to configure everything properly the first time. I'm still a dork now,
you know
Anyway, thanks again to you all for the links and the opinions!
