I have tried to search on the microsoft but it is a bit vague and when you
google it the results just bring up loads of websites relating to it training. Anyway could someone tell me what MCSE electives does the Security+ exam cover. If I pass that would I have to take any extra electives in the security catergy? Thanks David Parkes |

If you take Security + I counts for a couple things.
Yes its an elective and yes its a security elective. And Yes you still take 298 as your MCSE design exam. Now to answer the question with all the formalities out of the way. for the MCSA, and you have taken or are planning to take CompTIA Security+ you will still need to take exam 299 or 350 or 227. So yes you must still take one more exam after the Sec+ test. The good knows is lets say you want to take 70-299 as your elective then by taking Sec+ you'll end up with that cert as well as the MCSA:Security Now as for the MCSE assuming you took 298 as your design exam the same two exams you choose for your MCSA:Security will carry over to the MCSE: Security. so in other words you only have to take 2 Security based exam electives, which isn't bad when you consider that is only one more than required for the MCSA or the MCSE. In other words to add the Security to your MCSE if you take the exams the right way you have it in 8 exams. Which if starting from scratch isn't bad. Lets say for example you have no certification at all and you want to prove your skills while getting the best bang for your buck. Then I might recommend the following 8 exams, for a total of 7 (yeah I know 7) certifications. 70-620 - Client 70-290 - MCSA Core 70-291 - MCSA Core 70-293 - MCSE Core 70-294 - MCSE Core 70-298 - MCSE/MCSE Security Design Core 70-299 - MCSE/MCSE Security Elective SY0-101 - CompTIA Security+/MCSE/MCSE Security Elective You'd end up with the following certifications (assuming you have none now) Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP Windows Server 2003) Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA Windows 2003 Server) Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator: Security (MCSAS Windows 2003 Server) Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE Windows 2003 Server) Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer: Security (MCSES Windows 2003 Server) Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS Windows Vista Configuration) CompTIA Security+ Certified Professional Then from here its up to you. Many of these exams also qualify you for other Certifications. for example with this combination you are only 2 exams away form an MCDBA on SQL 2000 or one exam away form either MCITP:Enterprise Support or Consumer support when exams become available, or for that matter 2 exams and have both as well. I know it can get confusing, I deal with these questions all the time, the best thing it remember is to look at one thing at a time. -- ..rev .. This is the exact track I am taking, and would have recommended, but wouldn't have been able to do it so clearly. In fact Security+ is the cert I'm currently working on. Red Swingline Stapler |
