MCSE - Tedious Question

Default Tedious Question

For some of you guys, I apologise in advance.

I have finished my A Levels and am looking to get into the IT industry. Is
it worth training up and doing the MCSE/MCSA? Is there a strong likelihood of
getting a job once I've done this?!

I know it's a really broad question but I'd really appreciate any advice
available.

Thanks in advance

With no experience, the certs are meaningless. So in a word, no.

Nah, that was an easy one. Advice would be to get experience if this is
really what you want to do. Volunteer, try for internship, start out with
a big box retailer and work your way into service dept, whatever it takes
to get some hands-on. Then, if you decide that you want to continue, you
might consider getting certified in what you are experienced in.

I totally disagree. There are tons of jobs at "Geeks on call" aren't
there? There are jobs, you just have to work from teh bottom up.

buy some books, a computer with TONS of RAM, grab a copy of VPC from
Microsoft, several copies of eval software (freely available from MS) and
train yourself for much cheaper. If you don't have an employer paying the
8k, it seems to be a huge gamble for what could be very little gain.

If they are paying *you* then maybe. I doubt that this is going to be the
case.

What "experience" do you think you'll be able to put on a resume?

If you were hiring somebody to admin your servers, and be responsible
for your data, and your connectivity, what would be *your* definition of
experience?

Would *you* hire somebody fresh out of a four to six week training program
with a brand-new piece of paper claiming to be a systems admin to run your
business critical network?

About as likely as hiring a kid with a first-aid cert to do heart surgery.

Sorry. Save your money, there's no shortcut. Get the training, sure, get
the experience, definately, then get certified to show you know your stuff.
