I have a laptop and desktop running off a wireless router. Both machines
connect fine to the wireless network. The laptop connects fine to the Internet through the network. The desktop is connected to the wireless network okay but I can't get it to access the Internet. As far as I can see both machines have exactly the same settings apart from their IP addresses. I'm getting desperate. Does anybody have suggestions for a possible solution. =?Utf-8?B?TWlraWVTbGF0cw==?= |

Hi
Can you actually type the IP number of the Router into the Desktop IE and connect to the Router's menus. Jack (MVP-Networking). No Jack. That doesn't work. In fact the desktop doesn't see the laptop on
My Network Places. The Wireless Network is shown as connected and the signal strength is excellent. Mikie > I guess you are using DHCP on the router to automatically assign IP addresses or are you configuring them manually. In either case it sounds like you haven't either got an IP address or have one in the wrong range if you set it yourself. It could also be that you entered an incorrect WEP Key when trying to connect and although it says your connected you'll have no ip connectivity untill you reconnect with the correct WEP key. Finally it could be that your equipment is incompatible, when I tried to connect my laptops 3945ABG 802.11g centrino adapter to my Adaptec AWN-8060 802.11b WAP it would connect but just didn't have IP connectivity despite setting the correct IP address settings and no security enabled. However that same 3945ABG adapter connects fine with my new 802.11g wireless router and I know that 802.11b WAP will work with my 802.11b CF Wifi adapter and I`m going to try it with my USB2.0 802.11g stick I got free with my wifi router to see if it works with that. So it could be 3 things; 1. Wrong IP address settings or no IP address settings 2. Incorrect WEP Key or other security settings 3. If your sure everything is right an incompatibility between wifi devices (my 802.11b WAP was supposed to be compatible with my 802.11g adapter remember it just didn't work). I guess you never had the desktop connected what equipment are you using? |
