Wireless Networking - router can ping yahoo.com, computer cannot

Default router can ping yahoo.com, computer cannot

I have a linksys wrt54g wireless router. If I log on to the router
and use the ping option on the administration/diagnosis page to
ping yahoo.com, no problem is encountered. If I do it from the
command window of the computer (only one computer is connected to
the router), I cannot ping anything, not even dns, except the
router itself.

From router's web page, I can traceroute to yahoo.com. From the
command window, traceroute to yahoo.com or dns stops after the
router, i.e. it shows the first connection to the wrt54g router,
the rest is "request time out".

Where is the problem? The router has internet connection and my
computer can access the router. It looks like the router is
blocking my computer's access to the internet, hence,
configuration problem. Is this a correct assumption?

My wrt54g is connected to a befsx41 router. Since all the devices
connected to the befsx41 (including the wrt54g) have internet
access, I believe that part is OK.

I have spoken to two Linksys' technicians. They all wanted me to
disable the wrt54g's DHCP server function. But routers are
supposed to forward packets, right? Even though befsx41's IP
starts with 105 and wrt54g's starts with 108, the connection
should still work.

Need more info.

Your router has two IPs. One public IP and one private IP (referred to as
outside/inside). In order to receive better help, collect and show here the
following three things.

Router's
Public IP
Public DNS
Public Gateway
Public Mask

Router's Private IP
Private Mask

Router's DHCP server settings and scope
DHCP scope of IPs to assign to clients
DNS to assign to clients
Gateway to assign to clients

With that info, we can tell you where the problem is.

Oh.. one more thing, sorry...

Show the results of "ipconfig /all" from the client machine.

Here is the info (the computer connected to wrt54g):

DHCP enabled: yes
Autoconfiguration enabled: yes
IP address: 108.157.231.100
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 108.157.231.126 (this is router's IP)
DHCP server: 108.157.231.126 (router is also the DHCP server)
DNS: 24.25.5.150 & 24.25.5.149

This is router's info:

IP address: 105.34.67.103
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 105.34.67.98 (this is the of the router the
wrt54g is connected to)
DNS1: 24.25.5.150
DNS2: 24.25.5.149
DHCP server starting IP address: 108.157.231.100
maximum number of DHCP users: 10

I think this "other router" may be a problem. Sounds like you have two DCHP
servers on your network. Should only have one on any segment. Sounds like
your client is picking up DHCP assignments from the wrong router.

You didn't mention two routers in your original post. Perhaps you can
explain your network configuration in more detail.

Also, you only showed on IP for the router. Each router needs to have two
IPs. (inside/outside). What are they and how do they relate? IOW, what is
your network architecture? Why two routers?

In my original post, I did say the wrt54g is connected to a
befsx41. Anyway, the lan configuraton is this:

cable modem -> befsx41 (with two computers and a switch which has
two other computers connected to it. They work fine for quite a
few years now.) -> wrt54g (with a laptop, which is having problem).

I could eliminate the befsx41 and use only the wrt54g. Since I'm
not sure how secure the wireless router is, I only turn it on when
needed and turn it off when not needed. (a google search on "crack
wep" gives 72,000 hits.)

I assign the befsx41 an IP address of 105.34.67.98 and this is the
gateway that is shown on the wrt54g. This shows that the wrt54g
can communicate with befsx41 with no problem. Since the wrt54g can
ping yahoo.com, its configuration should have no problem.

Routers are designed to exchange packets between networks and I
deliberately set up the two routers so they are on two different
logical networks, thinking that if someone breaks into my wireless
router, he won't have a free ride to all my computers.

Yes, you did. Sorry. I was thinking the wrt54g was your wireless network
card.

Agreed, it's communiation with *the upstream router* should have no problem.
Doesn't say anything about the downstream client's of this router.

Well, routers pretty much *have* to be on different networks. Otherwise
you'd use a switch.

Really, in order to make much sense out of these I'd need the following
info.

befsx41 Router1 (outside interface)
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . :
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :

befsx41 Router1 (inside interface)
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . :
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :

wrt54g Router2 (outside interface)
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . :
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :

wrt54g Router2 (inside interface)
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . :
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :

Laptop ipconfig /all

Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . :
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :

With this info, it should be easy enough to see where the communication
might be failing.
