Hello -
Please help! I have called both my ISP and Linksys and been told to call the other.I have DSL and my PC is connected thru the USB port. I bought TIVO and want to connect that by wireless. I have a Linksys WAP11. That is the extent of my knowledge. Can anyone help me set up my wireless router? I do not have the disk that came with the WAP11 Access point. When I go online to the Linksys website it ask me for an SSID number. What is that and where do I get it from? Does my PC have to be wireless for this all to work or can I leave my desktop connected by USB to the westell router and then just have tivo set up wirlessly thru the WAP11? I really appreciate any guidance anyone can give!!!! -- Trying to learn.... =?Utf-8?B?Q2x1ZWxlc3M=?= |

Hi
Please post the Westell excat Model? The main issue is whether you have also the capacity to connect via Ethernet, or your Modem (or Modem/Router) is USB only. If it is a USB only it is not a simple affair. Jack (MVP-Networking). "Clueless" <> wrote in message news:F816ECD4-9804-46EB-BC37-... > Hello - > Please help! Hi
Westell 6100 is a DSL Modem/Router; it should have an Ethernet output (looks like a big Telephone jack). Giving you precise instructions is beyond the scope of such media (newsgroup), so I would try to direct you to self-education info and you would have to take it from there. First step make sure that you can use the Ethernet connection between your current computer and the Modem/Router. You need a Network card in your computer and a Cat5e cable to connect between the computer and the Modem/Router (disconnect the USB cable). The configuration is similar to the USB connection. You would not need to change anything in the Router. When the Ethernet works, you have few options. The Tivo needs a special Wireless card to connect Wirelessly. It might be that your WAP11 can be used for this purpose; look at the WAP11 manual, few versions of this Access Point (an old but very good device) can be configured to Client Mode. In Client Mode, this device is a Game box (bridge) Wireless card and after configuration can be hooked to the TIVO. ( http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html ). Buy a Linksys Wireless Cable/DSL Router (I suggest Linksys because there is better chance that the WAP11, being Linksys would work better with Linksys Wireless Router). Configure the Linksys Wireless Router to work as a switch with an Access Point (instructions here, http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html ), plug the Wireless Router to the Westell and plug your computer to the Linksys, when you can use the Internet from the Computer through the Linksys and the westell configure the Tivo. If the WAP11 does not work with the TIVO, you would have to buy a Wireless Card that does work with the TIVO. The above is the general approach. All of this devices need to be configured and connected correctly you would have to read the manuals to do so. More about Wireless here, http://www.ezlan.net.#Wireless Jack (MVP-Networking). Hi;
You can find out more about your WAP 11 here; http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...&ssbinary=true You've got a wireless access point, your Westel will need to be configured to give out at least three IP address, for it to be useful. You might want to do | Start (menu) | Run | CMD [enter] | ipconfig and report the subnet mask you get and the IP address you get if it starts with a 192.168. number. -- David Hettel Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. I believe you can most likely leave your desktop setup the way it is. The
answer to that depends on how the Westel is configured and what your ISP permits, you'll most likely need to be able to see both the Westel and the Linksys. -- David Hettel Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Hi
If the ISP is providing a customer with a Combo Modem/Router. would not it imply that the customer is allowed to use the Router. I.e. to share via LAN. Jack (MVP-Networking). When I first started getting into DSL my ISP provided me with a router with
a netmask of 255.255.255.254, I've also heard that others have had such restrictions. I'm also assuming that the USB cable will be configured as a LAN port. I don't know that the LAN port will be configured to the same IP range as the RJ45 port. Do you? I'm also aware that some combo modem/routers can be put into a bridge mode and the router disabled altogether, simply because it happens to have a router doesn't necessarily mean it's enabled and being used. Agree chances are it is and will work, but until it does work for him it doesn't really matter. -- David Hettel Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
