Hello, anyone in here up to speed with WEP / WPA / TSIK / AES ...
and all that other gobbledygook connected with wireless I've only had my Linksys WAG354G for a few months and it was a hardware version 1.0 which I'm pretty sure means that it cannot download faster than 1mbps. The newer same model WAG354G adsl/2+ ...I think can download up to 24mbps but, I now don't need to buy one of those. ...unless I've got the wrong end of the stick somewhere. ...But, that's not the stick I should be rambling on about. When I was using the above WAG354G adsl modem/router and sending wireless to Dads PC downstairs to his pci card (wmp54g), they were both set to use WPA , which I understand is more secure that WEP. Now I've just connected up my Orange Livebox, seeing as Orange were kind enough to send it to me and upgrade me to 8meg BB, and charge me £3 a month less ! ...after waiting for me to 'phone them up and ask about it after I'd spotted it on their website !! ...but, that's another story ! I can't understand the menus in the Livebox, there only seems to be a slot to type in a 26 digit hex. format WEP key. There's some radio buttons to select: WPA or WEP Security WPA only WEP only No Security I found http://www.orange.co.uk/time/livebox/security.htm which doesn't explain very much and I haven't been able to find a "pairing" button in the menus in the Livebox, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the Orange box like the Linksys firmware/software where you type in a passphrase and in a slot underneath a hexadecimal type "key" is generated automatically. In short I had to use the WEP setting in both PC's to get wireless to work, and after doing that I changed the 'WPA only' radio button to 'WPA or WEP Security' button, in the Livebox, and it's still working okay downstairs ! But, I have the feeling that WEP is being used and on both and I would like them both to be using WPA ? ....any pointers gratefully accepted ! regards, Richard RJK |

The order of security capacity is.
No Security MAC WEP WPA-PSK WPA-AES WPA2 Wireless Security - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Security.html WEP, WPA, and the Future - http://www.ezlan.net/wpa_wep.html The security must be set according to lowest possible. I.e. If parts of your system might be capable to do WPA2, but one device is only capable to do WEP, to whole system must be configured to WEP. Jack (MVP-Networking). Thanks Jack, much obliged.
I continued rummaging and found:- http://forums.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/f...29&PN=1&TPN=33 ....now, if this person knows what they're talking about, then it seems that the one key serves both WEP and WPA, which would sort of answer why one can select "WEP or WPA Security" in the Orange LiveBox menus. In other words, there's not much in the Orange LiveBox menus and settings, and what is in there, is ambiguous ! The Linksys firm/software is MUCH better written that this Orange thing !!! regards, Richard "Jack (MVP-Networking)." <> wrote in message news:%23XJF%... > The order of security capacity is. > > No Security > > MAC > > WEP > > WPA-PSK > > WPA-AES > > WPA2 > > Wireless Security - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Security.html > > WEP, WPA, and the Future - http://www.ezlan.net/wpa_wep.html > > The security must be set according to lowest possible. > > I.e.
