Default Problem with Network Connections

I have previously set up and was running a wireless home network on Windows
XP with a laptop and desktop both connected via wireless to an adsl router. I
had problems with the router (a Linksys WAG54GS) dropping the internet
connection. After a lot of help form Linksys support the internet connection
is working.
However I have now lost my home network. Each PC shows it own shared folders
but neither shows the other's.
When I open the desktop's Network Connections window there are no icons
present.
I have changed from the Linksys Wireless Configuration to Windows XP
Wireless Zero Configuration Utility but when I try to open Network
Connections I get an error message saying that Network Adaptors could not be
found and that Network Connections needs to be running and enabled. However,
I can't find out where I run and enable Network Connections.
Also, when I try to run "Set up a home or small office network" the wizard
does not run.
Finally, I used to have wireless connection and internet connected icons in
the system tray but these are no longer present.
I tried re-installing Windows XP but I cannot run set-up as the version of
XP I am running is newer than that on the installation disk (I assume because
I have used MS updates to upgrade to SP2)
Any help would be most gratefully received as this is really frustrating!

Hi
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,
http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html
As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what is allowed
to be shared. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304040

Thanks Jack.
The problem is not really about file sharing and I think that it is more
fundamental. When I open Network Connections there are no icons showing the
LAN or Internet Gateway connections. I get error messages saying that Windows
cannot find Network adaptors. When I try to launch any of the links from
Newtork Connections eg Set up new home or small office network the wizard
fails to launch. I wonder if Windows XP may have become corrupted in some
way. I have run RegRecall but this has not corrected the problem. Is there a
manual fix for this type of problem?

It sounds to me as if your cards may not be power up. Do you have a button
to turn on your wireless cards or perhaps a key press combination like
Function F5? In | Control Panel | System | Hardware (tab) | Device Manager |
is there a listing for Network adapters? If it's there and you click on the
"+" in front of it are your wireless adapters listed? Often wireless
adapters are power down when there is no network for them to connect to,
this sounds like it might be your problem to me.

Thanks David
I am using a Linksys USB wireless adaptor to connect to the gateway. The
device manager lists the device under network adaptors and the device is
enabled. The power and status lights on the device are both on. There is a
green Linksys monitor icon in the system tray and this shows the device
connected to the gateway and internet. I can connect to the internet via this
PC but not the LAN.
When I right click on the Network Connections window I get the following
error message:
"The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network
Adaptors on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections
service is enabled and running."
Interestingly when I click on Network Troubleshooter, Set up home or small
office network or Help & Support Center from the Network Connections window
nothing happens i.e. the programs won't launch - this is what makes me think
that Windows has become corrupted.
I don't know how to check that the Network Connections service is enabled
and running.
Any further suggestions please?
