I've found over the years that when setting up a wireless network it is
often helpful to initially set it up with security disabled. We don't have
to do that now, let's see if we can figure out what is going wrong with the
way it is set up now. Then once it is up and running to start adding the
security features one at a time. This helps to separate where any problems
are. There are two version of XP, XP home and XP Pro, there are some real
differences when networking between the two, down the line that may make a
difference.
Ok Here is what I'd like you to do for now.
1) Reboot your V5031EA without it wired to the wireless router/modem. By the
way what model is this please?
2) With the wireless turn on does your V5031EA report that it finds your
network? With the card active (you should have some kind of indicator light
showing that the wireless/wi-fi/ is enabled) it should find your network
within a minute or two of your V5031EA finishing the boot process.
This is the first step. If it fails to find the router/modem do you have
SSID enabled in the wireless settings for your router/modem? Hopefully
you'll have an icon in the bottom right corner of your screen on the Taskbar
for the wireless card. It may appear as one computer, if so right click on
it and you should see an option to find wireless networks. If you click
(left button) on this option does it find any networks? Or are you told it
can't.
