I have the Doulos Golden Reference Guide for VHDL, but I have often
felt frustrated by it because it doesn't provide simple examples for
each entry, although it will often provide more complex (and therefore
less obvious) ones. It's not a book I could recommend. YMMV of course.

I liked "The designer's guide to VHDL" from Peter J. Ashenden, 2nd edition from
"Systems on Silicon", "Morgan Kauffmann"
http://www.ashenden.com.au/designers-guide/DG.html
http://www.amazon.com/Designers-Guid.../dp/1558602704
etc...
