Hi,
I'm preparing for the 70-282 MCP to become an SBS. I'm a bit confused by a couple of terms I see in my practice questions and hope I can get a clarification from the community. Thanks in advance! Please help me understand the difference between a hardware raid 5 and a software raid 5 Thanks! =?Utf-8?B?U2Nyb2No?= |

Hardware RAID (any number) is handled by a physical, hardware controller (RAID controller). Software RAID is handled by, yes you guessed it, software. Windows Server for example has software RAID options. |

Would you still not have to have at least 3 disks (in addition to the system
disk) to implement a Raid 5 either HW or SW? With that said, would you still need some sort of controller to connect the 3 disks needed to implement a SW Raid? My confusion is, how do you implement a SW Raid 5? thanks "Jonathan Roberts" wrote: > > "Scroch" <> wrote in message > news:63CC722A-21B9-4FD0-A510-... > > Hi, > > > > I'm preparing for the 70-282 MCP to become an SBS. This is the best I could find: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID#RAID_implementations. Please look at this and then ask any specific questions that are left. I think this will help you. There are more detailed links but they are often OS/vendor specific. Jonathan |

Hi Scrotch,
Yes in order to configure a RAID-5 array, whether by software or hardware, you would need to have three (or more) phsycial drives. That holds true for any RAID configuration. The differences are: 1. For a hardware RAID you obviously need a RAID controller instead of the regular SCSI/SATA/IDE controller; and 2. hardware RAID is OS agnostic. Though you will need a driver for it, your hardware RAID should work in any OS. Good luck on 70-282 and let me know how you do! M -- MDG, MCT MCSA (2003), MCSA (2000), MCDST. I was using "Self Test" software to prepare for the exam, took it last night.
many questions felt very familiar, thought I was doing well. On the practice tests, I was getting 96% and 98% consistantly. Meaning out of 50 questions, i'd miss 1 or 2. I finished the test, thinking I did great, and scored 612. 700 is the passing score. I really thought I was prepared. I'm now going to try the "Measure Up" practice tests. I'll use them both now.
