Default Does my MCDST cert. qualify for an MCSE elective?

I'm just getting started on my MCSE and I'm looking for a little direction.
I just passed my MCDST and I'm wondering if that will qualify for any exams
for the MCSE.

According to the MCSA on Window Server 2003 page
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mc...3/default.mspx you can
use your MCDST toward an elective, that's nice.

But on the MCSE site it says under "As an alternative to the electives...may
be substituted " section it says MCSA on Microsoft Windows 2000 but not
2003.

Does anyone know if the MCSA on Windows Server 2003 may be substituted as an
elective on MCSE?

The reason I'm asking these questions is that I don't want to take any more
exams than I have to.

Hi Aaron,

It does only in a roundabout way.

Firstly you should realize that being an MCDST qualifies more under
administration than under the other. MCSE requires higher base skills than
does MCSA.

However since it does count as an elective to MCSA, follow that path. If
you get your MCSA (70-270, 70-290, 70-291, +1 elective) then you are only
three exams away from your MCSE (70-293, 70-294, + 1 design).

Hope this helps!

Hi Montreal,

Thanks for the info. That does help. My plan is to have the MCSA in one
year, then my MCSE the year after that. Do you think that's taking too long
or is that a reasonable plan?

If I can speak for Montreal for a moment, you should take as long as you
need. Sure I am a fan of deadlines, but book the exam when you feel you are
prepared for the exams. That is an unpredictable timeline, but it is the
right one for you. THe key is to LEARN the product, not the tests.

Here are my questions to you. Will you be prepared to complete teh MCSA in
one year? Will you be able to complete the MCSE the following year? What is
your expereince like?

The exmas will actually get easier as you get going as you will find
yourself in study mode and you will learn at a quicker pace. You will also
see that there are times when some of the material will overlap or at least
compliment each other. And before the nitpickers claim NDA violations, you
can see that they overlap from the prep guides. Certain technologies also
overlap, but that's a different discussion. Just ask an old Exchange 5.5
guy about sites, the KCC and why AD is a rip-off <g>.

Good luck from another Canadian (though not from Montreal) MCT
