Asymmetrical Wireless Transfer Speeds.

If I transfer a file from my desktop to my laptop, I get 2.2MB/sec.
If I transfer a file from my laptop to my desktop, I get 900KB/sec.

Desktop 1GHz Celeron Windows 2000 SP4 wired ethernet to Netgear WGT624
Wireless Router.
Laptop Compaq Presario 900 Athlon 1500 Windows XPHome SP2 Dlink
DWL-G650M Cardbus Card.
TotalCommander reads out a running transfer rate during the transfer.


Second laptop VelocityMicro/Compal 1.7GHZ P4M WinXP Home SP2 built-in
INtel Wireless DOES NOT have this problem.
Get consistent 2.2MB/Sec both ways "G" only.
With the Dlink DWL-G650M I get 4.4MB/S from desktop to laptop and 3.6MB
from laptop to desktop "Super G 108" mode.

My conclusion is that the DWL-G650M and its driver are capable of high
speed both directions.
The Dlink and Netgear appear to be compatible with the 108Mb/S protocols.

Sounds like a configuration problem in the Compaq laptop. But I have no
idea what to look for.

The Compaq version of XP may configure itself differently??? I loaded
SP2 myself. I used TcpOptimizer.exe to change the MTU to 1000.
My Verizon 768K DSL is horribly slow with anything > 1000. Get near
rated speed with MTU at 1000. All my systems are configured at MTU=1000.

Ideas?

Hi
You should check all Network Related settings (including the network Card
Drivers) and start while all settings are on Default. DSL ICP/IP MTU should
be 1492 (I have Verizon too), there might be something else that is set
incorrect and affects the MTU. Check the Router's MTU as well (set it to
1492).

It seems that we've forked into two issues...neither of which I understand.
My Verizon DSL is claimed to be DHCP in interleaved mode, not PPPoE.
My "understanding?" is that MTU=1492 is for PPPoE?
My line should run at 1500??
I did a bunch of experiments trying a number of different MTU settings.
AT MTU=1000, I get a reliable 700ish Kbps using verizon speedtest.
At anything over 1000, I get wild variations in test speed between
200Kbps and 500Kbps. I went round and round with Verizon over this
with no help at all. I gave up when I discovered the MTU "fix".
My Westell 6100 modem is set at 1500. The manual shows how to view it,
but not how to change it.

If there's a way to get that extra 10% up to 768Kbps, I'm all ears.

My current issue is file transfer between computers. I understand that
global settings can affect that, but I'm not willing to give up internet
connectivity/speed to fix one laptop. I need something that fixes both.

"Checking all network related settings" sounds like a great idea until
you realize that I have absolutely no idea what to check for.
This is a used laptop with unknown history. I have no idea what was
changed. Is there an online tutorial on this? Or a tool to change
everything back to default? I've been experimenting with tcpoptimizer.exe.

I did try reloading windows to insure default settings,
but I don't have restore CDs and the OEM
cd I tried resulted in XP activation issues, so I put it back to the way
it was.

Not sure where to go from here.
