Belkin (Router) Access Point PROBLEMS

I want to hook up my internet from a Belkin wireless router to a Belkin wireless access point (aka Router) wirelessly. I have configured the access point and can ping it from the Router and it works fine. However, when I plug the access point into my laptop I cannot get internet though it. I can connect to the access point just no internet. I am wondering if I am missing a step. Any help would be great.
