media disconnected error on wireless adapter

I have a D-Link G DWL 510 PCI card in my PC. It used to work fine but I tried
to connect tonight I got the media disconnected message. Windows says it
cannot repair the connection nor show all wireless networks. Network Stumbler
and Wireless Setup Wizard both show the wireless network. Network Stumbler
shows a noise of around -56dba and a very good signal strength. I used Device
Manager to uninstall the card and reinstall it. It's now known as wireless
connection 3 and shows it is working properly. I ran ipconfig and got zippo
back.
Suggestions?

If I recall correctly Network Stumbler takes control of a Wi-Fi card and
puts it into scan mode. If it is running you are not going to be connected.
Stumbler is in control of the card and the card is seeking networks. Just
because you can see a network and you have a strong signal does not mean
that you are connected to the network.

If this is your network, you really shouldn't need stumbler to see it. If
it's not your network there are a number of reasons as to why you may not be
able to connect. And again you wouldn't need stumbler to find a network that
was inviting others to use it.

Hi

Netstumbler actually turns WZC Off while working, and then turn it On upon
exit.

If Signal is good, and repair does not even work then it means that the
Client cannot get an IP from the Wireless source and maintain a connection.

You have to look over all the settings in the Wireless source and the client
and make sure that they are compatible.

May be something in these pages can generate a clue.

Well, sun of a gun. It used to work just fine with Stumbler running. I used
it toget a decent read on noise, signal strength, and the like. With the
wireless router in the northeast corenr of a bilevel and the PC in the
southeast lower corner, I wanted to make I was punching out. I'll try that
and see what happens. But I do have to start up Stumbler manually, and I
always shut it sdown when I'm not checking the waves.

UPDATE:
I whacked Stumbler.
I also followed the tips I found at
http://www.anetforums.com/posts.aspx?ThreadIndex=28415

The suggestion by "andyshane" posted on 8/5/2005 is what did the trick.
Somehow, Wireless Zero Configuation had gotten set to Disabled" instead of
"Automatic".
This seems to be a good way to disable wireless on any PC, desk or lap,
especially if the Admins locks out access to Services.
