Cisco 1417 ADSL connection with Virtual-Template1 (possibly a NATfeature failure?)

Hi all from Matteo Rinaudo.
I successfully connected my Cisco 1417 to the Internet. My IOS release
is 12.1(1) and does not permit to use the `dialer' interface while
configuring a PVC like this way: encapsulation aal5mux ppp dialer.
I connected to the Internet via the encapsulation aal5mux ppp
Virtual-Template. I also set up ip nat (in/out) as I always do.
I can ping everywhere once connected, but if I present myself to a
pubblic address with the IP address of the ethernet interface
(e.g. 172.16.1.1/16) it doesn't work, probably because NAT over virtual
interfaces does not work correctly (Virtual-Template1 is always down by
default in all IOS releases).
Is it a NAT failure? If yes, where I can find an updated IOS release
which allows me to use the `dialer' interface?
