xp slow to open files/programs

Hope this is the right place to ask, intalled window xp month ago. worked
ok. install two or three programs (wordperft, kodac, ?) no problems. in the
last week when I boot up, then desk top ok, but when I try to open any file
i get the hour glass for 3 sec then back to the arorrw, then I wait and wait
about 45 sec to one minute and finilly it opens. once any file is open from
then on any other file will open fast. I did a defrag . . no change. in
frustration i some times click it over and over then wait a minute or more
finily it open many copys. Any ideas ?? thanks Don

What version of XP did you install?

Did you enable the built-in firewall?

Do you have any firewall enabled?

Did you download and install the O/S updates?

Have you check for spyware, trojans and adware?

Do you have a high-speed Internet connection or dial-up?
