How to configure ADSL Modem Router Wirelessly?

Hi
I am trying to set up a friend's home networking. Due to practical
difficulties, he can not install a telephone line in the room where his PC
is. Our plan is to get an ADSL router and a wireless USB adapter, connect
the ADSL Router in another room where there is a phone line and then connect
the wireless USB adapter to his PC and access the ADSL Router and hence the
internet that way.

The problem is how do I set up the router initially seeing that it is not
physically connected to the PC? Will the adapter see the router's web based
configuration page even though nothing has been set up? Or will I have to
first connect the ADSL router physically to the PC, configure it and then
remove it and then connect to the phone line in the different room and then
connect the adapter to the PC and access internet that way?

Any advice/suggestions would be greatfully appreciated. We want to make
sure it will be possible to make it work before my friend parts with his
money.

The ADSL router, may or may not come with wireless ability. Generally they
don't have this feature unless it is stated. My experience is generally the
ADSL router comes preconfigured for the most part and simply plugs into the
phone line. Some ADSL providers do use PPPoE if your provider uses this you
would need to enter it into the wireless unit. The wireless part will
generally need to be configured, at a minimum you would want to change the
default passwords. Sometimes this requires a wired connection always,
sometimes it can be done wirelessly depends on who makes the wireless unit
and what it's default settings are.

YOu need to be hard wired to the router to set it up initially. Start with
no encyrption and then add layers one at a time. Use WPA and MAC filtering
and then you can disconnect to connect wirelessly.

Hi

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

We ARE planning to get a wireless ADSL Router. I have done some research
and as David states quite correctly, it seems some come with the wireless
switched on and security switched off as default (especially Belkin) so that
the initial confifuration can be done wirelessly. Having said that, I am
competent enough to configure it hard wired and then re-connect wirelessly.

Any ideas what make is better than others? I have been using a Netgear
(DG834G) for over 2 years with my daughter using a Netgear wireless adapter
to share the net for over 2 years without any problem but I hear there are
others out there now which are better and easier to use.
