hi All,
About a month and a half ago, I experienced inconsistent network services from my IBM T43 laptop from some automated updates on the access connection software and drivers for Wireless, Bluetooth and Dial-up. Finally about 4weeks ago, the services on the laptop started crashing, an extensive analysis pointed to a WinSock2 corruption. I have sinced rebuilt the winsock2 registry following all the KBs in support and start with all the basic devices drivers(without updating). After which, I still have both bluetooth and wired modem dial-up connections problems and peer-to-peer (Adhoc) networking problems, only the Wifi services running thru Infrastructure type (router based) networking is working well. On further analysis, I realized that the IPv6 components are not working, and again back to the KBs, I followed. However, running the thru some of the installation processes which I found as below:- ++++++++++++++++++ How to install and uninstall IPv6 Written by Soumitra Sengupta MVP How to install and uninstall IPv6 To install IPv6:- Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. At the command prompt, type: ipv6 install and press the Enter Key. To uninstall IPv6:- Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. At the command prompt, type:netsh int ipv6 uninstall and press the Enter Key. Restart the computer. +++++ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555577/en-us +++++ The installation replied with a "Failure to complete action" + "Error 0x800704b8" Is there are way to recover from this failure? and what else should I look out for based on the problems I have been facing? The easiest solution to ALL your problems in one hit would have been to use
restore mode to go back to a date before all the problems started happening. Can you still do that? Hi DC,
Thanks for the reply. It was a good suggestion, however myself and the IBM tech support figured that too, but with no better result due to the constant updates of the system, we are unable to restore before the updates over the time period. Any other suggestions? If you have actually reinstalled as you said you have, my bet is that you have - or still have - something on your machine that you didn't want in the first place that has altered your winsock. Download winsockXPfix.exe and run it. http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/WinsockXPFix.exe has it. I have used it on many co-opted machines. Let us know how all goes after you run it. |
