So, I've read the documentation, but still can't figure out how to allow my
laptop (connected to home/office network router via wireless) to share files with my desktop (connected to router via ethernet). Probably a very basic question, but would appreciate if you can point me in the right direction. Below is the config: Desktop: XP Home Edition 2002 SP2 ethernet connection to Linksys router can access the Internet Laptop: XP Pro 2002 SP2 has both wireless and ethernet connection to Linksys router, although I don't generally use the ethernet connection can access the Internet I've tried bridging the networks, but get an error message saying that I have to select 2 networks that are not on the Internet. The Network Setup Wizard seems to be designed for 2 wired networks, rather than 1 wired/1 wireless, but not sure. Many thanks. -Andrew =?Utf-8?B?YWhlaXRuZXI=?= |

XP Home: (XP Home can ONLY use "Simple File Sharing" and is already set that
way) 1) Windows Explorer | Right Click on C drive and select Sharing | Check "Share this folder" | type in sharename of 'cdrive' (sans quotes) | OK. XP Pro: (can use either Simple File Sharing or not) 1) Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View Tab | Scroll down to bottom and select "Use Simple File Sharing". 2) Windows Explorer | Right Click on C drive and select Sharing | Check "Share this folder" | type in sharename of 'cdrive' (sans quotes) | OK. From either box: 1) Windows Explorer | Tools | Map Network Drive | Type in \\othercomputername\cdrive | Finish. That should do it. If you DO NOT WANT Simple File Sharing on XP Pro, you will have to go to both computers and create the exact same userID and password on each before attempting to map a drive. -Frank "aheitner" <> wrote in message news:295F49D2-76B8-4B49-8B39-... > So, I've read the documentation, but still can't figure out how to allow > my > laptop (connected to home/office network router via wireless) to share > files > with my desktop (connected to router via ethernet). Frankster,
Great - thanks. One final bug: The XP Pro laptop can see the XP Home desktop and can read files from it and write files to it. The XP Home desktop shows the laptop in My Network Places/Microsoft Windows Network but can't access the laptop to read/write files. Any ideas? Thanks again. -Andrew "Frankster" wrote: > XP Home: (XP Home can ONLY use "Simple File Sharing" and is already set that > way) > 1) Windows Explorer | Right Click on C drive and select Sharing | Check > "Share this folder" | type in sharename of 'cdrive' (sans quotes) | OK. > > XP Pro: (can use either Simple File Sharing or not) > 1) Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View Tab | Scroll down to > bottom and select "Use Simple File Sharing". > > 2) Windows Explorer | Right Click on C drive and select Sharing | Check > "Share this folder" | type in sharename of 'cdrive' (sans quotes) | OK. > > From either box: > 1) Windows Explorer | Tools | Map Network Drive | Type in > \\othercomputername\cdrive | Finish. > > That should do it. > > If you DO NOT WANT Simple File Sharing on XP Pro, you will have to go to > both computers and create the exact same userID and password on each before > attempting to map a drive. > > -Frank > > "aheitner" <> wrote in message > news:295F49D2-76B8-4B49-8B39-... > > So, I've read the documentation, but still can't figure out how to allow > > my > > laptop (connected to home/office network router via wireless) to share > > files > > with my desktop (connected to router via ethernet). Is the XP Pro box using Simple File Sharing, or not?
If not, did you create the exact same userID/password combination on each box and are you logged on as that user on the XP Home box when you attempt to map the drive on the XP Pro box? BTW, if yes, you MUST have a password on both boxes I think. Don't use a blank. Also, if XP Pro is not configured for simple file sharing, have you checked both the share permissions as well as the file permissions on the C drive? Typically, the share permissions should be FULL for EVERYONE and the File permissions should be "users". -Frank "aheitner" <> wrote in message news:9DE1087E-3EF2-4D56-A9B0-... > Frankster, > > Great - thanks.
