3640 boot problems

This is a new 3640 with 1 x NM2FE2W and 2 WIC-1T's

128MB main memory and 32MB Flash.

We had to load the IOS using xmodem in rommon and all went well. The router
never comes up. We have tried 5 IOS's and always get the boot below and then
it hangs requiring a power cycle. If we remove the NM2FE2W it boots but not
much use without the cards?

Any pointers please..

Mem registers all 128MB memory and have tried removing sticks etc just in
case. IOS is running on other 3640's with FE cards etc.

Couple of things to test

1) Does this NM work in another router?
2) This same version runs on the other 3640? Does that guy have more
memory?
3) Did you manually tune the iomem size?

You should try to enable smart init. You can do it in rommon.
I think that NM-2FE2W module require more than 25% of iomem but I don't
remember how much.

There is a table of iomem requrements for modules in 3600 series routers on
cisco.com.

With the NM-2FE2W pulled the router boots and I can set the iomemsize.

50% failed as it said it did not have enough memory to load the image and
40% it just hangs with no message as below.

Smart Init is disabled. IOMEM set to: 40

Using iomem percentage: 40

You must reset or power cycle for new config to take effect
rommon 2 > reset

How do I enable Smart Init ?

Gary,
I can see that your IOMEM is set to 25%, from the boot message.
So, when cards are installed, this is reserving too much memory
from the IOS host code, and I think there's not enough main
memory, and IOS can't run.

So, try this:

Unplug all the cards, and boot the router. Then change the io memory
size to 10:

memsize iomem 10

Save the config.

Plug the cards back in, and reboot again. It should work now.
I think you can also say "no memsize iomem 25", and smart-init
would size this correctly for you. You can try that, it's better
than settting an arbitrary value like 10%, but either should work.

IOMEM is carved from main memory to reserve it for packet IO,
for efficiency.

Good luck.
VoipGuy.

I had a similar problem with the NM-2FE2W card. I had to change the IOS Version to 12.2-40 and it works great. For some reason 12.3 and 12.4 would not work.
