I have an old machine running Windows 98SE. All the other machines run
Windows XP Home or MacOS X Tiger and can all see the internet and each other. Internet connection and LAN connection is through a Linksys ADSL wireless gateway. I put a D-Link DWL-G510 wireless card in the the Win98SE machine. The D-Link configuration/monitoring utility says it is connected to my access point. WPA PSK encryption is configured correctly for the wireless card on the Win98SE machine. I can't ping the gateway or any other computer on the LAN. The IP address shown in the winipcfg table for the wireless card does not conform to the rest of my network. It should be like 192.168.1.90 or something, but is instead a comepletely different IP number. TCP/IP properties for the wireless card is set to obtain IP automatically and to use DHCP, but this does not appear to be working since it is not getting the right IP address. I've tried running the Internet connection wizard, choosing to connect through a LAN and automatically detect network settings. This doesn't work. How can I fix this? I also have a Linksys WMP54G wireless card as well. I haven't tried that one in the Win98SE machine yet, so I will swap the D-Link Wireless for that one if I still can't get any luck with the D-Link card. Fred fred |

The problem seems to have sorted itself out by "magic". I tried a "release all" and "renew all" with winipcfg and it came alive. Incidently, I had tried this several times before without success. Windows 98 just seems to be temperamental. Or just plain mental. Fred fred |
