i have a dell dimension 4300 and i get constant static out of the speakers,
insignificant when the song being played is fairly loud but annoying as heck
between songs and with soft songs. is there any kind of filter that i can get
free that will cancell this out? i have swapped speakers etc. so i know the
problem is internal......

try muting the CD Audio channel in the windows mixer panel. See if it makes
a difference.

Well it is a Dell so what do you expect?

Could be a crap soundcard, if you have a microphone it could be on and
needs to be muted, if you have a CRT monitor then try moving the
speakers further away from it.
