Satellite Broadband?

I'm currently living in the country. Cable does not reach this far out
and neither does DSL. It seems my only other option is Directway
Satellite. But $99 a month is pretty steep in my opinion. Does anyone
know of any other alternatives? Also, does anyone have any knowledge
about Satellite connectivity? Speed, Latency, Reliability?

What I know from the Directway site is that it'll cost either $599.00
for equipment and installation then $59.00 a month or $99.00 a month
for the first 15 months, then $59.00 a month after that. Apparently
you need a special Satellite to do it which is why the high price. But
is a 'Special' Satellite really needed? Can a person just buy a
broadband modem compatible with the dish connection then pay the
$59.00 a month?

Please, any answers you might have would be really helpful as I'm
currently thinking about moving in order to get my broadband back....
*screams his frustration with dial-up...*

ISDN is NOT broadband. Don't even consider it.

Either way you failed to answer the ops question. Which was "Can he use a
broadband modem with a satellite connection?" The answer is no. As all the
equipment is dependant on a satelite that can transmit the data, so to
answer that question, yes a special satellite is required.

And to derek / nul. ISDN SUCKS!!!!! You are paying too much money for a
service that is only marginally faster than dial-up, and still ties-up a
phone line.
