A few weeks ago the audio of my laptop (14 months old) began to crackle.
Now, all of a sudden, the left hand stereo channel does not make any sound
at all. There is no sound through the laptop speakers or when using
headphones. There is nothing in my setting to suggest that I have changed
anything.

Is this likely to be a hardware fault. Can a sound card burn out or
something and would it have this effect?

Any suggestions?

Sounds like the audio hardware crapped out. Since this is usually integrated
onto the laptop mainboard, it will not be a cheap repair if the unit is out
of warranty.
