I have a client that wants a Mac compatible 2GB Fiber switch. H
believes Compac has fiber switch for around 4500.- but not sure if it i
compatible? Apple recommended a Fiber switch for 12K which is to
expensive

Here's the scenario..

They have 2 G5 hi-definition setups accessing a Dual 1.33Ghz X-serve
controlling a 2.52TB Xraid, with RAID 5 configuration. All connection
will be via 2GB fiber channel

Unfortunately, the Xserve has only 2 fiber ports, necessitating the nee
for a 2GB fiber switch

The big question is, what switches are compatible with Apple

Good Fibre Channel switches *are* expensive. $12K is low for a 2 Gb
FC switch.

Looks like the $4500 you mention must be for the
HP StorageWorks SAN Switch 2/8-EL (list $US6400). That's an
8 port fibre fabric device, 1 or 2 Gb, but limited to
scaling to 4 switches. At that price point, you also do not
get any of the optional software, including not the fabric
management software (which I believe you are going to need unless
that X-Serve already has fabric management.)

Is the StorageWorks compatable with Mac OS-X? Sorry, I don't
know, and that's not relevant to comp.dcom.sys.cisco .

Fibre Channel is very pricey. The goal should be moving towards iSCS
solutions. Cisco 5240 is a great Fibre to Gbit Enet solution. I
addition, with Trunking on Cisco switches you can effectively make
nice 2Gb pipe with two connections to the Xserve

HOWEVER, I believe latency might be a big issue with Ethernet (iSCSI
vs. Fibre Channel and that's especially a problem with video editing (H
onlining). But if voice is not a problem (via QOS) then I don't see
problem with storage tech

Anybody messed with Cisco 5200 series

Since we do need ablility to online in HD, an affordable solution is a
follows. A vixel 12 port fiber switch costs about $4K. It is authorize
for use by Apple. Basically, through the switch, our two G5s ar
connected to a 2.52 TB Xraid, using RAID 50 striping. Since HD ca
demand up to 200MB per second, I think iSCSI is out

BTW, if your clients insist on an Xraid as a storage/capture solution
the only way possible is with a 2.52 TB. You need all 14 drives stripe
to get the proper data rate transfers

Sorry, you lost me. What does it mean to "online in HD" ?
Is that like streaming video at HDTV resolutions?
