Binaries?

Have only recently got access to broadband and binary groups. The one in
particular I am interested is news:alt.binaries.sounds.karaoke
I'm using OE and if I open any of the posts all I get is gibberish, I don't
get a file with an attachment. I know that I have to get all the parts then
combine and decode. OE Help says on the Message menu click Combine and
Decode but it isn't there, only Unscramble (ROT 13). I posted a request to
that group for FAQ's if available but got no response. Any help
appreciated, I'm new to this particular thing.

The posts were likely encoded using the "yEnc" encoding scheme, which
Outlook Express does not support. The reason yEnc is used, is because it is
a more efficient encoding scheme, and reduces the upload and download
overhead. It has become the defacto-standard in binary posting on Usenet.
Unfortunately, despite this fact, Microsoft has yet to include yEnc support
in OE. (I'm not sure whether the new version of OE included with XP SP2 adds
support for yEnc or not though.) You either need to use a different
newsreader which has yEnc support, or get a program called "Yproxy" that
will allow you to view those posts with OE. I switched to Agent newsreader
for binary downloads, when yEnc started to get popular a couple of years
ago. Most yEnc encoded posts will say "yEnc" in the subject line so you
should be able to determine if those are the posts that you are having
difficulties with.

Thanks for the reply, have downloaded the trial version of Forte Agent which
hopefully will allow me to get these files.

The file might be split into parts. You need to download each part and the
select all the messages and combine them.
