I am on the verge of purchasing a new Dell computer. They want to give me a
free Dell A-920 printer. I don't really want it since I have 2 nice HP
printers. My wife says "What the hell? Take it. It's free." That's good advice
but I'm sure the only reason their giving it away (or sell it for a mere $89)
is to get you to buy ink cartridges from Dell. I doubt if Wall-Mart sells Dell
ink cartridges.
Anyway if anyone would like to offer their comments on the quality of this
particular printer I would appreciate it. Maybe I can get 50 bucks for it in
the local trading post.
Thanks

The Dell printers are made for them by other companies. I am sure you will
be able to get the cartridges most anywhere. There should be an equivalent
in the original manufacture, unless Dell had something custom made for them.
They go with whoever gives them the best contract agreement. It is a very
low end printer for that amount of money.

You will find that with any of these packages you will get a lot of odds and
ends that you really don't need, and are part of the cost.

Why are you not having a PC custom built for you? This way you can choose
how you want it, and what you want inside.

Build your own PC, and by the way, HP cartridges are not exactly low price.
(Didnt Dell and HP merge ?)

Just an FYI, Lexmark makes Dell's printers. Unless Dell has had them
engineered to take a unique cartridge, you may find that Lexmark brand
cartridges will fit it. However Lexmark replacement carts are usually some
of the most expensive on the market. I'd sell the Dell printer to someone,
and keep using your HPs. Unless you wanted to keep the Dell printer as a
backup or something.

refills, or factory new ones? Even at the US/British exchange rate that
would be exceptional for new cartridges. We pay about $25 for epson carts
here.

I go to computer fairs at the end of every month and you can get almost
everything there half the price that you would pay in shops, it is
absolutely legal it just cut's out the middle man, so your going to get
stuff allot cheaper.

And yes they are new ink cartridges.

I buy generic Epson Stylus COLOR 800 cartridges for $4.50 black and
$6.50 color. They seem to work just as well as the genuine Epson ones.
One reason they are so cheap is that they don't include the print
heads, as do the HP ones. The printer is over four years old and still
runs fine. It goes through a strange routine every time it's turned on
which seems mainly to spray ink! It also make all sorts of mechanical
noises, which don't do much except to move the heads. As long as it
keeps on printing, I can't complain!

Info I ran across some months back-don't remember where so I won't swear
it's correct-is that Dell *did* have the printers engineered to take a
unique cartridge. Not sure that there's any physical difference, but it
appears that there's a difference in the ID chip embedded in the
cartridges because I recall being told that the printers required Dell
cartridges.
