I have three DVD drives on my PC. Two are DVD+ rewriters and the other
just a normal DVD ROM drive. This morning I bought a DVD dual (i.e. + and -) burner to replace the DVD ROM drive. I fitted it OK and it was reading discs, but I couldn't get the software to load and the existing DVD burning software for the other DVDs (both Philips) wouldn't work with the new drive. So I tried loading other burning software including Adaptec but they didn't work either. Then suddenly all three of my drives stopped working properly. They wouldn't read the data on them. Sometimes they would show what was on the disc but as soon as I tried to open any files the blue screen of death appeared. I took the new drive out and put the old DVD ROM drive back, but the same thing happened with that. I can't burn anything to discs either. When I try to open Nero software, that too causes the blue screen of death to appear. On one occasion when Nero did open, a notice appeared saying that the "Auto Insert Notification" had been turned on and that it (Nero) would turn it off then restart the computer. It did that, but the DVD drives still won't work either for playing or burning. Everything else works as before; it is just the DVD drives that are affected. I looked in Device Manager and no problems are reported for any of the three drives. I am wondering if the Adaptec software might have caused this to happen. Any advice will be much appreciated. If XP, have you done a system restore? It's Windows 98, so unfortunately there is no system restore. I have now got the drives to work but it has left other problems, such as drag & drop keeps stopping working and I have to keep rebooting to get it to work again. But at least I can now use the DVD drives to back up everything and then reinstall Windows. I located the file that was causing the problem. It was called scsi1hlp.vxd. I did a search on that and it seems that it was Adaptec Easy CD Creator that created a conflict with it as it has been known to do that many times before. I just renamed the file by changing the extension to "vdx" for now and the drives immediately started working again. |
