my documents are hidden

I just hooked my old hard drive up to my new laptop. All is working
well, yet the "My Documents" folder disappeared. I eventually found it
in hidden docs. Upon transferring my old docs into my new docs section
the file icons are still "faded" in color. Why is this? Why would my
old documents file be hidden?
