Default can't install anything

I'm running XP pro SP1, everything has been working fine for months but now
Windows Update doesn't work. When I try to install DirectX9 it hangs on
"Installing" and if I right click any file or folder on my pc, the
Properties or Sharing options do not do anything. I've ran Norton and
Adaware but they can't find anything.

Any ideas???

Thanks,
Matt

ps. Yes I am using a proper copy of XP (not hacked)

All of my restore points have disappeared. I've also tried booting from the
xp cd and running the repair function but this has made no difference. This
all seems to have started since running windows update which didn't finish
properly.

Try deleteing all the files in the windows temp folder, delete your cookies,
delete your temporary internet files then try again.

I'm in the same boat as you, and have asked here twice about it. I have
tried all the suggestions from here and from HP (my puter is HP), and
NOTHING has worked. Just woke up one morning and the frigging thing won't
download any updates and some etailers shopping carts will not work. All
happened at the same time as if something happened in the middle of the
night when I wasn't even using the computer.
