Backing up hard-drive to CD-R's?

I want to back up the most important stuff on my PC's hard-drive to several
CD-R's. So I find this apparently convenient program simply called "Backup"
that must have come with the Windows 98 that I have on my PC. However,
whenever I try to specify the destination as being my 52X CD-R/RW drive, I keep
getting this frustrating message that says something about my not having
permission to open the file and that I have to get permission from the owner or
administrator. Huh?

I don't want to use the program that came with my 52X CD burner because
apparently it will only allow me to back up my entire hard-drive - not just the
most important stuff on it, and apparently it won't allow me to do subsequent
back ups in which I back up only the files that are new or have changed since
the previous backup. So what can I do? Any efforts to help will be greatly
appreciated - thanks.

Also, the program that came with my 52X CD burner states that in order to back
up my entire hard-drive, which is about 20 GB, it requires as many as 31
CD-R's! But so far I've used only about 1/3 of my hard-drive (less than 7 GB),
so I figure it should take only about 10 or so CD-R's. Approximately how many
CD-R's will I actually need?

Again, any efforts to help will be greatly appreciated - thanks.

It really depends on how much the backup program compresses the files.
