Default Sound problem

My computer freezes for about 5 seconds before a sound occurs. Like a
windows event sound.
Just curious if this could be a driver problem or just cheap onboard sound.
I have installed the newest C-media AC97 drivers.
Running win98se
It is a cheap mobo with on borad sound and lan (jetway)
And a 1.7 cele (I just wanted a very cheap upgrade.)

You can get a PCI soundblaster for about 20 bucks I think...works fine
for pretty much anything...then disable that onboard sound, as it sounds
like its eating up CPU clock cycles.

I concurr with the scrapping of the ac97 embedded sound card. I bought an
asus p4t533c mobo about 18 months ago... pretty much top of the line mobo at
that time (imho). When I would launch wolfenstein GOTY edition, the sound
of the intro clip would become scratchy about 1/2 the way though then go
completely dead. The sound came back during the game and had no problem.
Didn't really bother me until I started doing video capturing/editing...
stuck in a cheap Soundblaster audigy... no problems now!

I put in another soundcard and my problems went away. Its even the same
c-media ac97 chipset. I can rember I even had problems with the onboard
sound from the start a few games were scratchy and I couldn't turn it up
very loud or it got distorted

C-Media AC97 onboard sound sucks. I have it on a Jetway V400DBL mobo and I
have been meaning to get a better sound card, but I have bee using the sound
in the front of the tower. Pluuged into the back, with Windows sound and
speaker sound completely up, I can barely hear. Can hear perfectly in the
front. Have the newest drivers.
