Best spam blocker?

Hello.

I just wondered what you consider to be the best Spam Blocker/reporter
available?

I've tried a couple of the freeware ones like SpamPal, and they just
don't seem to be doing the job even if I add details to the blacklist.

What I'm looking for is something that will prevent any Spam or
viruses from even reaching my inbox. Something that will just block
it, or even something that will automatically send a report on the
origin of the spam/virus to the provider of where it came from, or
update the details in the central database for the anti-spam program.

Just recently I keep getting sent a couple of similar email. One from
Microsoft Internet Security Center saying "Current Security Upgrade"
and another just from Admin saying undeliverable message! Both
contain a worm virus with various names and ending in extension dot
ZL9.

I am currently just running the freeware AVG anti-virus program which
is up-to-date, it doesn't seem to do anything when the virus arrives
in my inbox which is rather worrying but if I forward the message to
the ISP of wherever it originated it says that it has cleaned the
virus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated on how I can block these from
getting through in the first place.

At the moment my email program is OE version 6 I believe. I always
thought there was an option in this not to download messages over a
certain size, but when I checked the only option is to break them
apart over a certain size. I'm not so sure that's the best solution
though because sometime you might need to receive legitimate larger
files.

Anyway thanks for any help on this. I think it's probably time to pay
for this service if that's what it takes to get the job done.

John

I use Mailwasher. It doesn't even get into your mailbox until you let
it. It shows you a preview of the email, and doesn't download the email
until you tell it to open the mail program. There is a free version I
beieve, but I went witht he paid, as I liked it so much.

I've been using http://www.activatormail.com/ for a couple of years now, I
get no spam/porn/viruses. I pay them to have my mail forwarded to my pop
account. Best money I ever spent!

From their site:
"ActivatorMail is a Managed Service Provider (MSP) specializing in email
security. Our revolutionary counter-measures enable customers to be
protected from threats such as viruses, pornographic material and
unsolicited mail (spam), long before they reach their network boundaries
saving bandwidth and lowering the risks of legal liability and potentially
costly network attacks."

The best spam blocker I've found is Netscape 7 aka Mozilla 1 (don't
remember the exact point release they're up to now). But it doesn't
prevent it from reaching your inbox, it just moves/deletes (your choice)
it automatically as it comes in.

The problem with all server-based solutions is that none provide a
guarantee against false positives. If someone sends me a message then I
want that message to reach me. Maybe it'll go into an unexpected place,
but at least I'll have it-it won't be stuck on a server someplace
waiting for me to OK it.

I don't want you to think that Netscape's spam blocker doesn't
incorrectly identify some real messages as spam-it doesn't provide any
more of a guarantee against false positives than the server-based
solutions do. The reason I like it better is because of how it handles
the messages it identifies as spam. Of course it also does a good job of
identifying spam in the first place, otherwise I wouldn't like it. But
then some of the server-based solutions also do a good job of
identifying spam. It's just that when they do identify one, right or
wrong, they then prevent you from receiving it until you go out & OK it.
In Netscape, the way I have it set, the spam simply goes into my Junk
mail folder for 2 weeks, after which it's automatically deleted.

Have you tried the newer Mozilla builds that have the bayesian (however
it's spelled) filter, that learns what spam is by what you tell it? There
are a few other freeware and commercial programs with the same bayesian
filter logic around, I like that my email client can learn what spam is
from me, instead of telling me what spam is for me.

I can definitely vouch for the efficacy of bayesean filters. I haven't had
to reclassify a false positive or false negative in months, with PoPfile (a
free bayesean filter). It has so effectively learned what is good and what
is bad, that I pretty much never have to worry about spam.

The versions with the Bayesian filter are what I was talking about. It
works very well, but has some trouble if you receive a variety of email.
For example, I receive mostly text email so any HTML messages, or
messages with graphics, that I receive have a high probability of being
spam. But there are a few services I subscribe to that send me HTML
email with graphics. Occasionally those are incorrectly marked as spam.

John, I can tell you by far the best one I have found is called. Checkit 86, there's a small fee for it. I believe it's $19.95. It's made by Smith Micro Software Inc http://www.smithmicro.com/. I've tried a few of them and this one's for me.
