Having backed some stuff onto CD-ROM, and then copied it back to a HDD

checked archive, unchecking read only. This hasn't worked, when altering
something in one of the files, it is now impossible to save without changing

right click on the folder only reset the RO status on the folder.

She must open the folder, highlight ALL files, then reset the RO property.

"ROM" *means* "READ ONLY memory".
So you said read only read only memory.

Even if files were marked as read only before copying to the CD, the
copy back to a hard drive should at worst, make them read only.
However, it appears that you copied the file collection as a
*directory*.
It is very likely that the directory itself is read only, which might
"protect" all of the contents.
Try copying one file to a different directory (say the TEMP) and see
if the attribute can be changed.
If so, then you will know the "culprit", the reason, the way for
prevention, and the cure if you forget next time.
