Default webroot products

Webroot's (free) Spy Audit found CoolWebSearch & Startpage on my PC. I
downloaded Spy Sweeper Version 3.5.0 (free 30 day trial). During first run
it found 1 object & 2 traces. However I was forced to interrupt the program
before it finished scanning. Subsequently, a full scan found no objects or
traces, the results screen showed no traces quarantined or removed since
installation. The log file confirms two traces of CWS_NS3 found during the
earlier scan.

I'm running win 98 1st edition, so I can't use CWShredder.

Beware of false positives. Both PestPatrol and SpySweeper have produced
false positives when I trialed them. They would say, for example, that
I had Bonz[a]i Buddy and yet, when following their their manual removal
instructions, none of what they described was found on my system.
Subsequent scans with Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, MSAS, and some scanners
turned up nothing. What they said was there was not there.

From what I see at download sites carrying a copy of cwshredder,
supported platforms are Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/2000/XP.

Interestingly enough, just this morning I was reading on Slashdot.org
that a spyware company (Spyware Assassin) I believe was convicted of
giving false positives in order to entice users to buy their full
product, and shut down. I'm sure Spyware Assassin wasn't/isn't the only
company to do such a thing.

See http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/03/maxtheater.htm and
http://www.ftc.gov/os/caselist/04232...omp0423213.pdf.

Sanford Wallace, one-time self-proclaimed spam king, moved from spam to
spyware. He would distribute spyware and have sites with popups telling
users they were infected and had to buy his anti-spyware product. The
FTC opened a lawsuit against in in October 2004.

InterMute (owners of CWShredder) Technical Support emailed me on 11th
January 2005, saying: "We are not compatible with windows 98 first edition.
We are only compatible with 98 se and above excluding NT machines".

I sent an e-mail to them saying that they should list the system
requirements on their web page for CWshredder
(http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html). More users voicing
the same request would help.

That e-mail is wrong. Obviously CWshredder *does* run under NT
machines. That is probably where it is used the most.

That may just mean those are the systems on which they have validated the
product, not necessarily that it's guaranteed to fail on others.

I sent an e-mail telling Intermute that they should put the system
requirements on their CWshredder web page. Their reply was, "CWShredder
is compatible with Windows 98SE and greater." Doesn't address the
absence of system requirements on their web page, though.
