Thousands of returned email

hi, i am getting thousands of returned email from Mail Delivery
System, Mailer Daemon, etc. It says it is returning mail from me that
I never sent. The messages I supposedly sent are mostly like the ones
below

I found out i have the Kafi worm but ive deleted it the mails is still
coming nonstop, abot 8000 a day. Im starting to doubt its just the
kafi worm because i cant possibly send 8000 mails a day from a few
minutes of online time on a dial up.

can anyone help?

More than likely a spammer has forged your email address into the From:
header of his spam (trivially easy to do).

He then sends out his spam run to millions of email address.

Many (if not most) of these addresses will be of non-existent users at v
alid domains.

The receiving system then bounces the messages, which unfortunately come to you
as your address is in the from field.

There is little you can do other than:

1/ Wait it out. In a few days (perhaps his next spam run) he may well pick
some other unlucky person's email address to use.

2/ Install some spam filtering software somewhere between your email client
and your ISP's email servers.

3/ Inform your ISP what is going on (if you haven't all ready), because
some of the spam recipients may well decide to complain to your ISP
naively thinking that you spammed them. Your ISP may also be able to
help with spam filtering.

4/ As a last resort you may choose to change your email address.

If you want help, you need to post the full headers otherwise its a
waste of time.

If your email address has been used for bulk emailing, check your
computer for trojans, clean it out and get a new email address.

I agree with Jim on this one. I suspect you have another critter
running amok. It "might" be a spammer has your address but I suspect
virus/trojan problem. Not enough information is provided. Reboot,
connect to Internet, then open a command window without browser open or
cruising the web, let the computer sit a minute idle connected then type
"netstat -an" in the command window. If you see a very long list of
connections (and possibly even if you don't ) you have a bug. Many
viruses have there own SMTP client built in

You didn't mention how you determined that you had Kafi worm. I find
that once a system is compromised it is seldom compromised by just 1
nasty. Are your virus definitions current? Too many folks don't get
virus software updates after trial subscription runs out.

I have seen Kafi variant that kills NAV before it finishes scanning the
full computer. Review logs and make sure no errors are reported for
directories or files the antivirus tool can not open. If I remember
right it is the windows security log that you will see error in. Make
sure system scan has scanned all hard drives.

If you are still in Win 98 you should consider upgrading as it is unsafe
at any speed (personal opinion). If you get machine normalized don't
use IE as default browser (personal recommendation is firefox browser,
and Thunderbird e-mail client http://www.mozilla.org IE and Outlook
are too dangerous to run for most novice users and even unacceptable
risk for very experienced users. There are at least 3 current exploits
that can compromise your system irrespective of antivirus tools on
system if you use IE as default browser or outlook express mail client.
