A while back I unchecked
"Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)" and "Enable Install On Demand (Other)" In an attempt to prevent programs from downloading themselves and installing themselves on my computer without my approval. It seemed to work for awhile but no longer. A number of programs have installed themselves in the last couple of weeks (through some other method?). One of these changed IE itself! (added it's own toolbar). All with absolutely NO approval from me. Is there ANY way to prevent programs from installing themselves on a Windows machine??? tvfun |

Start using Mozilla Firefox web browser instead and 99% of your spyware
problems will vanish. http://www.mozilla.org/ -L "tvfun" <> wrote in message news:SBlCd.4819$ ... >A while back I unchecked > > "Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)" and > "Enable Install On Demand (Other)" > > In an attempt to prevent programs from downloading themselves and > installing > themselves on my computer without my approval. > > It seemed to work for awhile but no longer. I have heard that...am going to download that later today.
This reminds me. I have a Mac machine that I bought used from a friend. It's running OS 10. I have been using it off an on, sort of learning about it and slowly moving some of my work to it. I have had absolutely 0 spyware or adware problems with this Mac machine. None. Zero, nada. I'm thinking that much of the spyware/addware issues may arise because of the way ActiveX (and maybe other aspects of Windows?) are. There was a big article in the Chicago Tribune this Sunday regarding Spyware and Adware becomming so bad that some people are actually no longer using their computers. The article made no mention of Macs at all. Just lumped the entire PC universe into one category. So here is a question: is the Mac operating system (I'm using OS10) really fundimentally better with respect to Spyware and Adware or have I just gotten lucky so far. I mean I have had absolutely no spyware/addware problems on it while two feet away on the same desk my windows machine is lit up by Adware like a christsmas tree - constantly. Same internet connection! It's striking. If Macs are so much better than Windows PC then the Apple community should get the word out! Same internet >connection! It's striking. Yes, it really is fundamentally better. However, it may not be better in a way that matters. It is better because it asks you before making any siginificant changes to the system. So, it avoids the behind-the-scenes installs. However, if you are downloading the latest desktop toy and it asks if it can install something, you'll probably say "yes." It can then go ahead and install its spyware, too. Craig Craig A. Finseth |

You need to target a critical mass if you expect to see your dirtywork acknowledged. > > If Macs are so much better than Windows PC then the Apple community should > get the word out! I think the word is out, amongst those who prefer macs. Where you been? lee |
