Can someone suggest a site that does a through job probing your machine for
security holes?

Here are a few which I use. Different sites will have different focus, so you
should use several if you are serious about a problem.

These probe for malware:

These probe for open service ports:

These evaluate your browser:

I keep all bookmarked, and use various ones depending upon the situation.

This is a good one also.
http://www.pcflank.com/ I might also mention that you can go here and
download free software that will scan your computer for root-kits. I would
guess that it's semilar to chkrootkit that I use.
