I just downloaded a trial version of ZoneAlarm Pro.
The little ZoneAlarm Icon in the taskbar changes from ZA to a little gauge and back again every minute or two. It's driving me crazy! What is it doing and how do I stop it from switching back and forth? BTW, I had an impression there is a separate ZoneAlarm newsgroup but I can't find it. Is there one? TIA Louise Louise |

I don't think there's any ZA newsgroup. There is comp.security.firewalls however... -- Kerodo Kerodo |

I then went to the newsgroup run by ZA and discovered that several people believe there is a memory leak while using XP. I just uninstalled it and will look at some other programs. Louise Louise |

Wise decision.. I'd recommend Sygate 5.5 or Kerio 2.1.5.. Both are very good... -- Kerodo Kerodo |

Preciesely, a quote from the help file: Your computer is sending (red band) or receiving (green band) network traffic. This does not imply that you have a security problem, or that the network traffic is dangerous. > What is it doing and how do I stop it from switching back and forth? > I don't see a way to turn it off. > BTW, I had an impression there is a separate ZoneAlarm newsgroup but I > can't find it. When I uninstalled the trialware they asked why and I told them.. But apparently I'm in the minority Louise Louise |

It works quickly, unobtrusively, and...you can hide the taskbar icon from view should it become distracting - but it isn't nearly as distracting as Zone Alarm to begin with. The program works very smoothly and doesn't appear to eat resources. Note this is after I downloaed and installed the newer Norton Personal Firewall which reulted in my system booting in 11 minutes (not exaggerating), rather than its usual 3 minutes tired of Norton's bloatware. I'm considering upgrading to Sygate Pro since they provide periodic updates. Have you done that and do you think it's a good idea? Thanks again. Louise Louise |

I guess upgrading would depend on whether you think you need the extra features.. I found the free version to be adequate for most purposes. I think it's a very solid and good firewall in general. It has smart dns and dhcp so it doesn't let anything in from servers other than your isp's and so on. Very nice. Not all firewalls are that smart. In the free version I think you can have up to 20 rules, so that comes in handy as well. Logging is very good, perhaps even overkill in some ways, but I like it anyway. Better to have too much than not enough.. All in all, I like the free version and haven't bought the Pro version, but that is entirely up to you.. There should be some kind of comparison chart of features on the Sygate site, so you might check that out and see if you need any of the Pro features. I don't know how their updates work, but I would assume that when there's a new version or release, that there would always be a free as well as a Pro version of it. -- Kerodo Kerodo |

One thing you should be careful of in Sygate is when you give a new program, or any program for that matter, internet access, make sure you later go into the Applications section and look at the Advanced options for that program. Sygate defaults to letting all programs have Server access. This isn't the best idea. It allows inbound connections. You should uncheck this box so your programs don't have Server rights, unless you find it absolutely necessary. Sygate, in my opinion, should have made this default to off, but for some reason they saw fit to do it otherwise.. That's about the only caution I would mention.. -- Kerodo Kerodo |

I looked at the options for, for example, my newsserver program (Gravity). Under advanced, I saw two checkboxes: act as client and act as server and they were both checked. Would a newsreader need server access? Or, for example, would Windows Media player ever need to have server access (both boxes are checked there as well)? I mostly use it for listening to music on my own system or often, for internet radio. I'm not sure I understand the concept correctly. BTW, I did see the comparison chart and it did seem one would be more "up to date" with it, but a lot of what it offers, is over my level of understanding so I'm not sure. http://smb.sygate.com/products/pspf/comparison_pspf.htm Thanks again for your help.
